NRMCA Discusses Concrete Paving with Students at Alabama Universities
NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Amanda Hult recently discussed basic concrete pavement design with students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Auburn University. The presentations were coordinated by Alabama Concrete Industries Association’s John Sorrell and focused on conventional, pervious and roller compacted concrete, and concrete overlays. The students were encouraged to include a well-designed concrete option for every project, as competition is good, noted Hult. She also praised the professors for allowing the concrete industry to present to the students.

"Thank you for allowing the concrete industry to expose your students to the different concrete paving options out there in the market," Hult said. "Hopefully, we have planted a seed in their minds so when they enter the marketplace, they may present other options to their clients. This was something that I learned 10 years after entering the working world."

Contractor Places Large Parking Lot in One Day
Swederski Concrete Construction, Inc. met the owner’s challenge of minimal out-of-service time by placing 80,000 square feet of paving and material receiving area in one day, reports NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Jon Hansen. Utilizing three laser guided placement screeds and a Saturday commitment from a ready mix producer for just this job, the project northwest of Chicago highlights the speed and back in service time that concrete is capable of yet so often is seen as a disadvantage.

"Swederski Concrete Construction, Inc. continually pushes the envelope in parking lot paving, whether it be in tackling a challenging overlay or like this project, meeting the customer requirement of reducing the onsite time," Hansen said.

Paving Division Schedules Introduction to Concrete Pavement Analyst Webinar
The NRMCA Local Paving Division kicks off its Webinar season by hosting the ever-popular Introduction to Concrete Pavement Analyst Webinar on Tuesday, November 29, at 2 p.m. Eastern time. Concrete Pavement Analyst (CPA) software is a flexible, market-specific and comprehensive sales and promotion tool. Using ACI and the Asphalt Institute recommendations, CPA compares total ownership costs, giving specifiers and owners the information they need to make sound parking lot pavement decisions.

Presented by Vice President, Local Paving Phil Kresge, this Webinar provides step-by-step instructions on how to use CPA to produce equivalent concrete and pavement designs as well as detailed life-cycle cost comparisons. Additionally, attendees will learn about strategies for making effective use of this outstanding tool. NRMCA members pay only $35 to register for the one-hour program. Ready Mix Industry Sees Dramatic Drop in 2015 Incident Rate
Released last week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), data from 2015 shows a dramatic drop in the incident rate of injuries and illnesses at ready mixed concrete plants. Injuries and illnesses occurred at a staggering rate of 6.3 cases per 100 equivalent full-time workers (known as the incident rate) at ready mixed concrete plants in 2014. That number dropped to its lowest in a decade in 2015, down to just 4.0. NRMCA attributes the rate drop to increased industry awareness, communication, NRMCA education courses and enhanced guidance on industry safety programs.

Court Ruling Halts Legal Challenge to Electronic Logging Devices
On Monday, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit again rejected the arguments of the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) in its attempt to vacate the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) rule. The court ruled that none of OOIDA’s five arguments against the legality of the ELD rule were valid. This development likely paves the way for the ELD rule’s implementation on December 18, 2017.

NRMCA Submits Comments to IRS Opposing Estate Tax Increases
NRMCA has submitted comments opposing the Internal Revenue Service notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) on changes to valuation discounts that would make it more difficult for family-owned businesses, like many in the ready mixed concrete industry, to transfer assets to future generations. Specifically, the NPRM would limit the use of valuation discounts for family-owned/operated businesses.
