You can now track Build with Strength (BWS) advocacy efforts with our new BWS Monthly Advocacy Report. Each month we’ll outline the state and local measures BWS is actively tracking and working on for the ready mixed concrete industry. There is no shortage of pro-wood industry activity at the state and local level. Stay informed, organize and activate!

Hank Hauge, director of technical services for NRMCA member Strata Corporation in North Dakota, recently hosted NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Chris Dagosta and Senior Director, Local Paving, Ken Justice for a discussion that ranged from Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) construction to concrete paving and parking lots. Dagosta took the lead on ICFs, presenting a business case for construction for low- to mid-rise structures while Justice spoke about concrete paving and parking lots. They presented in Fargo and Bismarck to five separate groups with approximately 60 industry professionals, including developers, architects, engineers, contractors and city officials. Dagosta and Justice report that the presentations were very well received and believe they'll help create continued relationships with NRMCA as well as generating Design Assistance requests.

Government Affairs

The wood industry is trying to replace concrete in the tall building market by pushing hard for Congress to include a Tall Wood Building Prize Competition in the 2018 Farm Bill. This prize competition is part of a separate bill that NRMCA opposes, the Timber Innovation Act (TIA), which unfairly and unsafely seeks to use taxpayer dollars to promote the construction of tall wood buildings 85 feet and above.

Please lend your support to industry efforts to stop the Timber Innovation Act by signing your company’s name to this letter opposing the bill. To have your company’s name listed, please email Andrew Tyrrell at atyrrell@nrmca.org. In addition, click here to send a letter to your senators telling them you oppose including the Tall Wood Building Prize Competition in the 2018 Farm Bill.

The Safety Contest & Benchmarking Survey has for years been a safety performance and incentive/award program aimed to foster safe practices at ready mixed concrete plants across the nation. The Safety Contest & Benchmarking Survey is a per-plant contest open to all facilities operated by NRMCA member companies in good standing in 2017. Companies with more than one division are encouraged to distribute entry blanks to individuals responsible for keeping safety records at each plant location.

Entries must be e-mailed by Friday, April 27, to Karen Bean at kbean@nrmca.org. Click here for more information and to download the entry form.

NRMCA Vice President, Local Paving, Don Clem, PE, recently provided attendees of the American Public Works Association's annual spring conference in Grand Junction, CO, an overview of concrete overlays of asphalt parking lots, the concrete pavement design center and www.pavementdesigner.org in a break-out session.

Recently, NRMCA’s Amanda Hult presented on the new ACI 330.2R-17 Guide for the Design and Construction of Concrete Site Paving for Industrial and Trucking Facilities to the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers at its annual convention in Owensboro, KY. Her presentation walked the engineers through the design procedures for over-the-road trucks as well as the specialty equipment that may be on the pavement. The attendees were also exposed to ACI 330R-08 Guide for the Design and Construction of Concrete Parking Lots. Many in the audience have never used ACI to design their parking lots, Hult said.

“I am still using AASHTO to design parking lots. I really need to step up my game and start using the appropriate documents for my projects,“ said one engineer to Hult.

If you would like more information on the new industrial guide, contact Amanda Hult at ahult@nrmca.org.

Business Advancement

Now in its 15th year, NRMCA's Developing Industry’s Leaders (DIL) program is a premier career development tool. Participants are given the opportunity to advance their strategic-thinking skills and network with peers while being mentored by NRMCA’s senior staff. The DIL agenda differs from other leadership programs in that it exposes 24 selected participants to our industry’s big issues from an all-encompassing, national perspective. Once done with their formal training, DILs are expected to make a long-term commitment to move their team’s initiative forward by joining, and attending, the appropriate NRMCA committee meeting twice a year. DIL participation on NRMCA’s committees infuses new blood into in industry’s leadership track.

Once selected, DILs work over the summer via conference calls and Webinars. They are then required to attend ConcreteWorks in Washington DC, September 28 - October 1. The group continues to work via conference calls over the fall and winter. They will present their findings at the March 5-7, 2019, NRMCA Annual Convention in Tampa. During their second year, DILs attend a two-day, June networking and leadership workshop facilitated by an executive coach. Finally, DILs are always invited to attend NRMCA’s semi-annual Board of Directors meetings to watch senior level executives deliberate and make strategic decisions that impact the industry, both short and long term.

If your company has a rising star whose career is ready to work on a national level, and will be given the time to participate in the required activities, please submit his/her application no later than Friday, June 15. Click here to access and download the application form. For more information, contact Eileen Dickson at edickson@nrmca.org.

Engineering

NRMCA’s popular Concrete in Practice (CIP) series provides concise technical information in a 2-page “What? Why? & How?” format for ready mixed concrete customers and other interested parties. The NRMCA Research Engineering and Standards Committee updates the content of these topics periodically to reflect the current knowledge. Five existing CIP topics have been revised and are now available:

• CIP 19 – Curling of Concrete Slabs

• CIP 20 – Delamination of Troweled Concrete Surfaces

• CIP 32 – Concrete Pre-Construction Conference

• CIP 37 – Self Consolidating Concrete (SCC)

• CIP 38 – Pervious Concrete

Click here to view CIPs and purchase for distribution to customers and other users. For more information, contact Jacques Jenkins at jjenkins@nrmca.org.
